A useful starting point
Before stepping away, secure tackle and make the area clear. Keep sharp components enclosed and do not leave loose line across the ground. An unattended setup may create a problem for somebody who arrives later. Decide with companions who is responsible for each item; do not assume that being nearby is the same as checking it.
Try this sequence
- Put sharp pieces in their enclosure
- Bring loose line under control
- Keep food and equipment separated
- Confirm who is staying with the belongings
A small worked example
A companion may be taking photographs during a break and may not be watching the equipment. Confirm responsibilities before stepping away. Keep sharp pieces secured regardless of who is nearby; a casual presence is not a substitute for a clear packing routine.
What to keep in your notes
Photographs can help recall the task but may omit the route, conditions or equipment labels. Pair an image with the specific note it supports. Keep irrelevant assumptions out of the caption, and do not treat an attractive frame as confirmation that a place or method is suitable.
